Vacuolar protein sorting-associated protein 4B (VPS4B)

Involved in late steps of the endosomal multivesicular bodies (MVB) pathway. Recognizes membrane-associated ESCRT-III assemblies and catalyzes their disassembly, possibly together with membrane fission.

Redistributes the ESCRT-III components to the cytoplasm for further rounds of MVB sorting. MVBs contain intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) that are generated by invagination and scission from the limiting membrane of the endosome and mostly are delivered to lysosomes allowing degradation of membrane proteins, such as stimulated growth factor receptors, lysosomal enzymes and lipids.

Steven Boster

Steve Boster, a Joliet-based physician, was born in Joliet IL. He died in Madison WI in the end after a long struggle with COVID-19. He was the father of Donald, Sr., David Boster, and Nina Mae Hall. His mother Frances and sister Tammy of Verona, WI, as well as his son Jonathan and grandson Cory, have left behind Steve.

Historie

The Historie of the VPS4B marker is the result of a gene mutation that impairs the activity of ESCRT-III, a transcription factor necessary for mitosis. VPS4B is a member of this family and is involved in the assembly of aberrant nuclei. This mutation causes cells to stop growing and to stop segregating chromosomes.

The gene encoding the proteins is located at spindle and centrosome poles. It is required for normal centrosome numbers in various human cell types, although the exact number depends on the cell type. The gene was found to cause cell death defects in cells that lack CHMP2A and CHMP4B, which are proteins that regulate VPS4B's function. Further research revealed VPS4B's role in cell division. This suggests that cells may not be able to divide as well as its depletion.
