This article examines the most notable win and loss for CCNY's basketball program. The NCAA semi-final win over Kentucky was the most memorable. What about the most shocking loss? Which players were the most impressive for their team? What about the greatest individual contribution to the team? We'll answer all of these questions in this article.
It is often said that the Beavers were the first college basketball team to win both the NCAA tournament and the NIT. Their most important victory was their 89-50 win over Kentucky's top-ranked team during the NCAA semifinals. That year, Kentucky was racially segregated, and many of their players refused to shake hands with the CCNY players, as did Adolph Rupp, CCNY's coach. It is highly unlikely that any college basketball team has ever suffered such a crushing defeat.
The team's starting lineup included three Jews and two African Americans. This upset was significant because Kentucky was a dominant program in college basketball. Adolph Rupp had made his team without any Black players. Kentucky had at the time dominated college basketball. But, Kentucky's inability to have Black players led to a disastrous program. The CCNY players took the game personally, not just because they knew they were beating the best team in the country, but because it was a symbol of Jim Crow.
In the Final Four, CCNY knocked off atop the NCAA tournament for the first time. The first step towards removing CCNY from the basketball scene was defeating Kentucky. The Beavers became a household name in the sporting arena. The Bronx-based Beavers were also a product of Brooklyn. They were later called "proletarian Harvard". Jackie Robinson never spoke of his race or social progress to the CCNY Beavers, but they were so successful that he never mentioned it.
In addition to the Kentucky defeat, the Beavers defeated Duquesne and Bradley in the NIT. Despite the Beavers' lopsided wins, there was controversy. In 1949-1950, players were caught in point-shaving controversies. While no game was fixed in post-season, the team would not be invited to any tournaments if they were. Another scandal involved Gene Melchiorre from CCNY, a guard who stole a pass of a teammate. One year, Irwin Dambrot of CCNY collided in an attempt to steal a football from a Bradley player.
The Beavers had no chance at winning the NIT. But the "Original Celtic” style they played was similar to Princeton under Pete Carril. This style of basketball was a positionless game and the Beavers were always in motion. The Beavers' success at the NCAA tournament was deserved.
1950 NIT was marred when a shocking scandal occurred. There were 18 teams that were selected, and seven of them were convicted of fixing games. The New York City Board of Higher Education investigated and found that 14 of the players had a history of cheating in college. This scandal prompted the NCAA to alter its tournament format to two teams from each district.
What is CCNY’s greatest financial loss? Its annual economic impact on society, which is calculated by Emsi, a labor analytics firm. Despite not offering athletic scholarships, college alumni include future Nobel Prize winners as well as budding novelists. Its alumni include Albert Einstein and Colin Powell, the former Secretary-of-State. Einstein gave the first lecture on relativity at its campus. Its most impressive loss was the one to Duke University by six points.
CCNY's basketball program isn't just a newcomer. The school has been around for a while. Its first season of winning was in 1949-50. After a scandal over point shaving, the school was moved to Division III. However, the team did have two winning seasons in the late 1970s and 2002-03, when it went 17-12. Green was hired to be the head coach in 2003-2004.
The Beavers won the NCAA championship beating Bradley 71-68. Holman had a fever that day and took the team with him to Broadway to see "South Pacific" the year before. The game was played with Holman on the sidelines because he was sick with a high fever. CCNY lost the title to Bradley, whom CCNY had beaten earlier that year.
The men's soccer team earned $36,172 in revenue. However, they had to pay out $34,813 in expenses. The men's team suffered a loss of $117. The women's volleyball team includes eleven players and a head coach. The team was ranked #304 among 72 schools in the division. What was CCNY’s most notable loss?
In the 1950s the City College of New York men's basketball team won the NIT, and NCAA tournaments. This remarkable run began with a 56-5 victory over Ohio State. In the NIT's second round, the Knights defeated San Francisco, 65 to 46. This win set up the team's rematch against Kentucky. Holman and Rupp then decided to see South Pacific on Broadway.
But was this CCNY's most significant win? They were bringing back most players from their last championship team. Although the win was expected, there was something more. A few days later, the team’s top players were arrested in a bus at Manhattan's Penn Station. This is why CCNY has a difficult schedule.
The most important game of the season for the Blue Devils came at the end of the year, when they faced a notoriously racist team - the Kentucky Wildcats. Bill Holman was the coach at CCNY and instructed his team to extend their arms to the Kentucky players just before tip-off. Despite the racial tensions, Kentucky players were unable to shake hands with the blue and white Knights. Despite the racist atmosphere, Kentucky was defeated by the Blue Jays 89-50. They also reached the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament.
The NIT was another significant victory for CCNY. CCNY finished their regular season with a record number of 14-5. They were not supported by the AP Top 20. With mostly sophomores, they were the last team selected for the prestigious NIT tournament at Madison Square Garden. The team reached the quarterfinals against a third-ranked Kentucky squad that had won the two previous NCAA titles.
