The interaction with PCNA prevents monoubiquitination of the latter thereby inhibiting translesion DNA synthesis. The binding of SDE2 to PCNA also contributes to processing of SDE2 by an unidentified deubiquinating enzyme, cleaving off the N-terminal ubiquitin-like domain.
