Retinol is bound by a protein called RBP2. This protein is a lipid-carrier and it channels retinol along with other lipids to LRAT. Retinol is present in the retina, and RBP2 binds to it in a tight, noncovalent manner.
RBP2 expression is closely related to the differentiation of Caco-2 cell lines and their confluence. Treatment with retinoic is increases RBP2 and retinol intake.
