Component of intercellular desmosome junctions. Involved in the interaction of plaque proteins and intermediate filaments mediating cell-cell adhesion.

May contribute to epidermal cell positioning (stratification) by mediating differential adhesiveness between cells which express different isoforms. Connected to the keratinization of epithelial tissues.
