Today is World Cancer Day. Each year, organizations and people from around the world unite on February 4th to raise awareness about cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, cancer mortality had dropped 32% from 1991 to 2019. This decline is mostly attributed to decreases in smoking and advancements in early cancer detection and treatment.
Despite this reduction in cancer mortality, cancer remains as a major public health problem worldwide. Globally, 1 out of 6 deaths were from cancer in 2018.
Prostate, colorectal, lung, and skin cancers are the most common cancers diagnosed in men. The most common cancers for women are breast, colorectal, endometrial, lung, cervical, skin, and ovarian cancers.
