The March edition of Research Spotlight presents 10 recent publications from scientists whom Boster has served.
In this edition, scientists discussed how a better understanding of the PD-L1 expression regulation can be pivotal in achieving better clinical outcomes in EBV-infected cancer patients. Another research study proposed a self-powered smart patch that serves as a reservoir of chemokine-/neural-directing exosomes, offering a serviceable strategy to stimulate skin neuro-engineering and regeneration of tissues and organs.
In terms of bone diseases, one paper revealed the potential role of Calca, an osteoblast-derived ProCT in the bone microenvironment that is required to limit bone resorption during iPTH. Several development strategies in the fields of nanotechnology and biomaterials were also achieved through the construction of cell-responsive peptide assemblies and nanorod-like coating with ions doping.

Journal: Nature Communications
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is reportedly the first identified human tumor virus, and is closely related to the occurrence and development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), gastric carcinoma (GC), and several lymphomas. PD-L1 expression is elevated in EBV-positive NPC and GC tissues; however, the specific mechanisms underlying the EBV-...

Interleukin-3 (IL-3) is a hematopoietic growth factor and critical regulator of inflammatory response such as sepsis. IL-3 binds to IL-3 receptor α (IL-3Rα), which is then associated with IL-3Rβ to initiate signaling. How IL-3-triggered physiological and pathological effects are regulated at the receptor level is unclear. Here, we...

Intermittent injections of parathyroid hormone (iPTH) are applied clinically to stimulate bone formation by osteoblasts, although continuous elevation of parathyroid hormone (PTH) primarily results in increased bone resorption. Here, we identified Calca, encoding the sepsis biomarker procalcitonin (ProCT), as a novel target gene of...

The dissolution-derived release of bioactive ions from ceramic coatings on metallic implants, despite improving osseointegration, renders a concern on the interfacial breakdown of the metal/coating/bone system during long-term service. Consequently, persistent efforts to seek alternative strategies instead of dissolution-derived...

Transplantation of stem cells with biomaterials has proved to be an effective way to improve cell engraftment and survival in treating degenerative diseases. Owing to their structural resemblance to the extracellular matrix (ECM), synthetic biomaterials have been shown to mimic the native tissue microenvironment and support regeneration...

Skin wound is always accompanied with nerve destruction. Due to the limited clinical treatment option, loss of skin sensation with unsatisfactory nerve regeneration is remained to be a challenge for wound therapy. Endogenous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) based in situ regeneration, of which, MSCs recruited by chemokines and directed...

Rationale: Tumor metastasis is the main cause for cancer-related death. However, the driving molecules of metastasis remain largely unknown. Here, we aim to identify long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) critical for human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) metastasis. Methods: Microarrays were used to screen a comprehensive set of lncRNAs with...

Background: Glioblastoma (GB) is the most common and highly malignant brain tumor characterized by aggressive growth and resistance to alkylating chemotherapy. Autophagy induction is one of the hallmark effects of anti-GB therapies with temozolomide (TMZ). However, the non-classical form of autophagy, autophagy-based unconventional...

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been manifested to manipulate diverse biological processes, including tumor-induced immune tolerance. Thus, we aimed in this study to identify the expression pattern of lncRNA homeobox A cluster antisense RNA 2 (HOXA-AS2) in glioma and decipher its role in immune tolerance and glioma progression. We...

Background: Atherosclerosis (AS) is the basis of diabetic macrovascular complications. The plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles transcytosis across endothelial cells (ECs) and deposition under the endothelium is the initiation step of AS.
