Research Spotlight - July 2021

In the July edition of Research Spotlight, we hand-picked a range of scientific publications that investigate several new approaches to control the development of chronic and morbid diseases without systemic side effects.

Among the studies, researchers discuss how modulations of IL-1β-primed ERCs, IL-23, Lnc-408, and LncRNA CERS6-AS1 levels could alleviate the pathological damages of ulcerative colitis, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer respectively. Associations between prenatal acrylamide exposure with decreased fetal growth are also further explored.

Scroll down to learn about new drug delivery platforms and therapies, and discover more about the immune response towards diseases.

IL-1β Pre-Stimulation Enhances the Therapeutic Effects of Endometrial Regenerative Cells on Experimental Colitis

Authors: Yu, D., Zhao, Y., Wang, H., Kong, D., Jin, W., Hu, Y., Qin, Y…
Journal: Stem Cell Research & Therapy

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, relapsing, and non-specific inflammatory bowel disease, and the current treatment strategies were mainly used to relieve symptoms or for maintenance. Endometrial regenerative cells (ERCs) are mesenchymal-like stromal cells and have been demonstrated to alleviate multiple immune...

Intravenous Delivery of Lung-Targeted Nanofibers for Pulmonary Hypertension in Mice

Authors: Marulanda, K., Mercel, A., Gillis, D.C., Sun, K., Gambarian, M…
Journal: Advanced Healthcare Materials

Pulmonary hypertension is a highly morbid disease with no cure. Available treatments are limited by systemic adverse effects due to non-specific biodistribution. Self-assembled peptide amphiphile (PA) nanofibers are biocompatible nanomaterials that can be modified to recognize specific biological markers to provide targeted drug...

Suppression of Mitochondrial ROS by Prohibitin Drives Glioblastoma Progression and Therapeutic Resistance

Authors: Huang, H., Zhang, S., Li, Y., Liu, Z., Mi, L., Cai, Y., Wang, X., Chen, L…
Journal: Nature Communications

Low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are crucial for maintaining cancer stem cells (CSCs) and their ability to resist therapy, but the ROS regulatory mechanisms in CSCs remains to be explored. Here, we discover that prohibitin (PHB) specifically regulates mitochondrial ROS production in glioma stem-like cells (GSCs) and...

Intratumoral Expression of Interleukin 23 Variants Using Oncolytic Vaccinia Virus Elicit Potent Antitumor Effects on Multiple Tumor Models via Tumor Microenvironment Modulation

Authors: Chen, L., Chen, H., Ye, J., Ge, Y., Wang, H., Dai, E., Ren, J., Liu, W…
Journal: Theranostics

Background: Newly emerging cancer immunotherapy has led to significant progress in cancer treatment; however, its efficacy is limited in solid tumors since the majority of them are “cold” tumors. Oncolytic viruses, especially when properly armed, can directly target tumor cells and indirectly modulate the tumor microenvironment (TME)...

Long Non-Coding RNA Lnc-408 Promotes Invasion and Metastasis of Breast cancer Cell by Regulating LIMK1

Authors: Qiao, Y., Jin, T., Guan, S., Cheng, S., Wen, S, Zeng, H., Zhao, M…
Journal: Oncogene

Invasion and metastasis are the leading causes of death in patients with breast cancer (BC), and epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) plays an essential role in this process. Here, we found that Lnc-408, a novel long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), is significantly upregulated in BC cells undergoing EMT and in BC tumor with lymphatic...

Gestational Acrylamide Exposure and Biomarkers of Fetal Growth: Probing the Mechanism Underlying the Association Between Acrylamide and Reduced Fetal Growth

Authors: Hogervorst, J.G.F., Saenen, N.D., Nawrot, T.S.
Journal: Environment International

>Introduction: Four epidemiological studies have shown a negative association between prenatal acrylamide exposure and birth size. In order to shed light on the possible underlying mechanism(s), we analysed associations between acrylamide biomarkers and biomarkers related to fetal growth. Methods: In newborns of the ENVIRONAGE birth cohort...

A Targeted Erythrocyte Membrane-Encapsulated Drug-Delivery System with Anti-osteosarcoma and Anti-osteolytic Effects

Authors: Wu, X., Zhang, X., Feng, W., Feng, H., Ding, Z., Zhao, Q., Li, X…
Journal: ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

Chemotherapy is one of the main treatment methods for osteosarcoma. However, conventional chemotherapy lacks targeting properties, and its long-term and extensive use will have serious side effects on patients. For this reason, a multifunctional nanodrug system (V-RZCD) targeting osteosarcoma was developed in this study. V-RZCD...

Authors: Zhang, X., Liu, X., Zhou, W., Du, Q., Yang, M., Ding, Y., Hu, R.
Journal: Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Background & Aims: Chronic inflammation in colon section is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Proinflammatory cytokines were produced in a tumor microenvironment and correlated with poor clinical outcome. Tumor-infiltrating T cells were reported to be greatly involved in the development of colon cancer...

LncRNA CERS6-AS1 Promotes Proliferation and Metastasis Through the Upregulation of YWHAG and Activation of ERK Signaling in Pancreatic cancer

Authors: Xu, J., Wang, J., He, Z., Chen, P., Jiang, X., Chen, Y., Liu, X., Jiang, J.
Journal: Cell Death & Disease

LncRNAs play essential regulatory roles in pancreatic cancer (PC) tumorigenesis and progression. We aimed to investigate the role of lncRNA CERS6-AS1 in PC. CERS6-AS1 expression was determined in PC tissues and cell lines by PCR analysis. The roles of CERS6-AS1 on proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial to mesenchymal...
