Research Spotlight - December 2022

Christmas is fast approaching and we’re delighted to present this year’s last issue of Research Spotlight, which features 10 selected publications from scientists whom Boster has served.

Recently, increasing attention has been focused on nanomaterials for therapeutic applications. Researchers demonstrated the immunomodulatory and spatiotemporal drug release effects of nanohydroxyapatite complexes, MSC-derived extracellular vesicles, antioxidant-constructed nanodrugs, Sr/Cu-borosilicate glass nanoparticles, and Mg-incorporated microspheres for cancer and cell injury.

Among the studies, scientists also highlighted the promising results of peptide- and adipose-tissue functionalized hydrogels for wound healing and tissue regeneration.

Nanohydroxyapatite Stimulates PD-L1 Expression to Boost Melanoma Combination Immunotherapy

Authors: Yang, Y., Cui, Y., Cao, W., Zhao, M., Lin, W., Xu, R., Xu, Y., Chen, Y…
Journal: ACS Nano

Although checkpoint-inhibitor immunotherapy held tremendous advances, improving immune response during treatment has always been an urgent clinical issue. With the help of mRNA microarray technology, it was found that short rod-like nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) promoted the upregulation of CD274 and PD-L1 related gene transcription, which...

Hair Follicle-MSC-Derived Small Extracellular Vesicles as a Novel Remedy for Acute Pancreatitis

Authors: Li, S., Li, H., Zhangdi, H., Xu, R., Zhang, X., Liu, J., Hu, Y., Ning, D…
Journal: Journal of Controlled Release

Background: Hair follicle-derived mesenchymal stem cell (HF-MSC)-based therapies protect against acute pancreatitis (AP). However, accumulating evidence suggests that MSC-based therapy mainly involves the secretion of MSC-derived small extracellular vesicles (MSC-sEVs) through paracrine effects. Thus, the present research investigated...

Structures of the CcmABCD heme Release Complex at Multiple States

Authors: Li, J., Zheng, W., Gu, M., Han, L., Luo, Y., Yu, K., Sun, M., Zong, Y…
Journal: Nature Communications

Cytochromes c use heme as a cofactor to carry electrons in respiration and photosynthesis. The cytochrome c maturation system I, consisting of eight membrane proteins (CcmABCDEFGH), results in the attachment of heme to cysteine residues of cytochrome c proteins. Since all c-type cytochromes are periplasmic, heme is first transported...

Spontaneous Immunomodulation and Regulation of Angiogenesis and Osteogenesis by Sr/Cu-Borosilicate Glass (BSG) Bone Cement to Repair Critical Bone Defects

Authors: Li, S., Zhang, L., Liu, C., Kim, J., Su, K., Chen, T., Zhao, L., Lu, X…
Journal: Bioactive Materials

Injectable bone biomaterials like bone cement should be designed and fabricated with certain biological criteria, which include: 1) recruitment and polarization of the macrophages from M1 (pro-inflammatory) to M2 (anti-inflammatory) phenotype, 2) enhance vascularization, and 3) activate osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived...

Elevated Neutrophil Extracellular Traps by HBV-Mediated S100A9-TLR4/RAGE-ROS Cascade Facilitate the Growth and Metastasis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Authors: Zhan, X., Wu, R., Kong, X.H., You, Y., He, K., Sun, X.Y., Huang, Y...
Journal: Cancer Communications

Background: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are considered significant contributors to cancer progression, especially metastasis. However, it is still unclear whether NETs are involved in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocarcinogenesis and have potential clinical significance during evaluation and management...

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Facilitate Premetastatic Niche Formation Through lncRNA SNHG5-Mediated Angiogenesis and Vascular Permeability in Breast Cancer

Authors: Zeng, H., Hou, Y., Zhou, X., Lang, L., Luo, H., Sun, Y., Wan, X...
Journal: Theranostics

Background: Metastasis is the leading cause of death in patients with breast cancer (BC). Primary tumors create a premetastatic niche (PMN) in secondary organs for subsequent metastases. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are a predominant stromal component in the tumor microenvironment and serve as a major contributor to tumor...

Biodegradable Magnesium Incorporated Microspheres Enable immunomodulation and Spatiotemporal Drug Release for the Treatment of Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head

Authors: Yang, F., Xu, C., Zhang, W., Sun, L., Feng, G., Ning, T., Wang, W...
Journal: Composites Part B: Engineering

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a progressive disease that may lead to collapse of the femoral head and subsequently, progression to osteoarthritis of the hip. Although biomaterials have been widely used as carriers of active pharmaceutical ingredient for the treatment of early ONFH, current carriers are incapable...

Peptide-Functionalized Double Network Hydrogel with Compressible Shape Memory Effect for Intervertebral Disc Regeneration

Authors: Ho, C.Y., Wang, C.C., Wu, T.C., Kuan, C.H., Liu, Y.C., Wang, T.W.
Journal: Bioengineering & Translational Medicine

As a prominent approach to treat intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, disc transplantation still falls short to fully reconstruct and restore the function of native IVD. Here, we introduce an IVD scaffold consists of a cellulose-alginate double network hydrogel-based annulus fibrosus (AF) and a cellulose hydrogel-based nucleus...
