Research Spotlight - December 2021

In our last edition of Research Spotlight this year, we're happy to feature 10 recent publications from scientists whom Boster has served.

Among the studies, scientists investigate the mechanisms of m6a reader for colorectal cancer, the anti-metastatic roles of dsRNA mimics, and the effects of USP12 on breast cancer angiogenesis.

In addition, scientists explore Vitamin D3's antioxidative stress ability as well as the lungfish cocoon's antimicrobial functions. Researchers also develop pitavastatin-loaded multilayer films that enhance osseointegration of metal implants.

Scroll down to find out more about these discoveries!

Vitamin D3 Protects Mice from Diquat-Induced Oxidative Stress through the NF-κB/Nrf2/HO-1 Signaling Pathway

Authors: Zhang, H., Liu, Y., Fang, X., Gu, L., Luo, C., Chen, L., Wang, Q.
Journal: Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity

Vitamin D3, as an indispensable and fat-soluble micronutrient, plays an important role in the health of humans and animals. At present, studies are focusing on the calcium absorption and immunoregulation function of vitamin D3; this study was aimed at exploring the antioxidative stress ability of vitamin D3 on diquat-induced...

Dysmyelination by Oligodendrocyte-Specific Ablation of Ninj2 Contributes to Depressive-Like Behaviors

Authors: Sun, Y., Chen, X., Ou, Z., Wang, Y., Chen, W., Zhao, T., Liu, C...
Journal: Advanced Science

Depression is a mental disorder affecting more than 300 million people in the world. Abnormalities in white matter are associated with the development of depression. Here, the authors show that mice with oligodendrocyte-specific deletion of Nerve injury-induced protein 2 (Ninj2) exhibit depressive-like behaviors. Loss of Ninj2...

N6-Methyladenosine Reader IMP2 Stabilizes the ZFAS1/OLA1 Axis and Activates the Warburg Effect: Implication in Colorectal Cancer

Authors: Lu, S., Han, L., Hu, X., Sun, T., Xu, D., Li, Y., Chen, Q., Yao, W…
Journal: Journal of Hematology & Oncology

Background: Accumulating evidence shows that N6-methyladenine (m6A) modulators contribute to the etiology and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the exact mechanisms of m6A reader involved in glycolytic metabolism remain vague. This article aimed to crosstalk the m6A reader with glycolytic metabolism and reveal a new...

The Lungfish Cocoon is a Living Tissue with Antimicrobial Functions

Authors: Heimroth, R.D., Casadei, E., Benedicenti, O., Amemiya, C.T…
Journal: Science Advances

Terrestrialization is an extreme physiological adaptation by which African lungfish survive dry seasons. For months and up to several years, lungfish live inside a dry mucus cocoon that protects them from desiccation. Light and electron microscopy reveal that the lungfish cocoon is a living tissue that traps bacteria. Transcriptomic...

Naked Mole-Rat Brown Fat Thermogenesis is Diminished During Hypoxia Through a Rapid Decrease in UCP1

Authors: Cheng, H., Sebaa, R., Malholtra, N., Lacoste, B., Hankouri, Z.E…
Journal: Nature Communications

Naked mole-rats are among the most hypoxia-tolerant mammals. During hypoxia, their body temperature (Tb) decreases via unknown mechanisms to conserve energy. In small mammals, non-shivering thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) is critical to Tb regulation; therefore, we hypothesize that hypoxia decreases naked mole-rat BAT...

Live Imaging of Neolymphangiogenesis Identifies Acute Antimetastatic Roles of dsRNA Mimics

Authors: Olmeda, D., Wallis, D.C., Mucientes, C., Calvo, T.G., Cañón, E…
Journal: EMBO Molecular Medicine

Long-range communication between tumor cells and the lymphatic vasculature defines competency for metastasis in different cancer types, particularly in melanoma. Nevertheless, the discovery of selective blockers of lymphovascular niches has been compromised by the paucity of experimental systems for whole-body analyses of tumor...

An Improved Osseointegration of Metal Implants by Pitavastatin Loaded Multilayer Films with Osteogenic and Angiogenic Properties

Authors: Chen, W., Xie, G., Lu, Y., Wang, J., Feng, B., Wang, Q., Xu, K., Bao, J.
Journal: Biomaterials

An increasing number of works have highlighted the importance of metal implants surface modification in enhancing bone defect healing through the synergistic osteogenesis-angiogenesis regulation. Studies have shown that pitavastatin has the effect of promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis. However, how to prepare pitavastatin...

Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 5 Aggravates Pulmonary Artery Fibrosis in Pulmonary Hypertension Secondary to Left Heart Disease via Activating wnt/β-Catenin Pathway

Authors: Lei, Q., Yu, Z., Li, H., Cheng, J., Wang, Y.
Journal: Journal of Advanced Research

Introduction: Pulmonary hypertension secondary to left heart disease (PH-LHD) is a common and fatal disease. However, no effective therapeutic targets have been identified. Objectives: Here, we set out to illustrate the functional role and underlying mechanisms of fatty acid-binding protein 5 (FABP5) in PH-LHD development...

USP12 Promotes Breast Cancer Angiogenesis by Maintaining Midkine Stability

Authors: Sheng, B., Wei, Z., Wu, X., Li, Y., Liu, Z.
Journal: Cell Death & Disease

Deubiquitinases (DUBs) have important biological functions, but their roles in breast cancer metastasis are not completely clear. In this study, through screening a series of DUBs related to breast cancer distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) in the Kaplan-Meier Plotter database, we identified ubiquitin-specific protease 12 (USP12)...

Metabolic Reprogramming Mediates Hippocampal Microglial M1 Polarization in Response to Surgical Trauma Causing Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders

Authors: Luo, G., Wang, X., Cui, Y., Cao, Y., Zhao, Z., Zhang, J.
Journal: Journal of Neuroinflammation

Background: Microglial polarization toward pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype are major contributors to the development of perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs). Metabolic reprogramming plays an important role in regulating microglial polarization. We therefore hypothesized that surgical trauma can activate microglial...
