The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. As COVID-19 spreads globally, communities are taking containment and mitigation steps while researchers are working hard to develop effective vaccines and treatments.
A recent research paper published in the journal Cell investigates how SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, infects target cells through the interaction of its protein spike with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. In the paper, Pöhlmann and his colleagues also discuss that SARS-CoV-2's protein spike is primed by the enzyme TMPRSS2. Furthermore, their research suggests that antibodies against SARS-CoV spike could hinder the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to infect cells.
We've also prepared an infographic for you that provides concise information about the coronavirus, transmission, symptoms, protection advice, and vaccines and treatments undergoing development.
