Significant in metal transport, in particular iron. Can also transport manganese, cobalt, cadmium, nickel, vanadium and lead.

Involved in apical iron uptake into duodenal enterocytes. Involved in iron transfer from acidified endosomes into the cytoplasm of erythroid precursor cells.
