The RPS27 protein is expressed by tumor-associated macrophages. This marker is independent to the CFTR or CD68 proteins. It is believed tumor-associated macrophages play a role in GBM tumors.

This marker was found in tumor samples from PA WHO grades I, III, GBM and IDHmut-glioma. However, GBM did not show any difference in its expression from NB gray matter. A TCGA brain dataset comparing ten gliomas and 542 GBM showed a 1.274-fold increase of RPS27 mRNA expression.

Recent research revealed that alcohol-associated HCC showed a significant increase in RPS8 expression. In addition, this gene was associated with a higher rate of tumor progression than in non-alcohol-associated HCC. Therefore, RPS8 may be a novel biomarker and therapeutic target for alcohol-associated HCC. These studies show how RPS8 plays an important role for alcohol-associated HCC.

The IVY Glioblastoma Atlas Project can be used to evaluate regional variations in tumor mRNA expression. The RPS27 marker was expressed in microvascular proliferation, pseudopalisading and necrosis cells. RPS27 was also expressed more in tumors that had multiple relapses. There was no significant association between RPS27-mRNA levels and progression free survival.
